Ad Hoc
writes...
Thomas Keller’s ad hoc, which literally means "for this purpose," was originally intended to be a temporary restaurant, open during the development of a very different concept. But, due to its loyal following, it was decided that it must be a permanent fixture in Yountville. ad hoc serves a prix fixe, 4-course chalkboard menu, changing daily. Food is served family style and reminiscent of the comfort food with which Chef Keller grew up.

The server forgot so many items we had to request them from the bus person, i.e., iced tea, lemon wedges, sweet n low, etc. Salad leaves were in such large hunks it was difficult to serve or eat w/o cutting first. The main, pork loin, was bland, served w/equally bland sides, polenta and sauteed greens, w/the most interesting/delicious course was the sheep cheese. But the worst part of the experience, by far, was the noise level, which was unbearable, & combined w/very loud music, made talking impossible w/o yelling. It was a painful experience that made us feel pressured to get through dinner ASAP and flee. Considering it was fixed price AND menu, w/corkage @ $25 for still wine, it was an expensive, thoroughly unpleasant experience.

ad hoc features a fixed 4 course menu that changes each day. The meals are served family style, meaning each course is brought out on a serving platter and each person helps themselves, which in my opinion is okay for 2 people, but for 4 or more people it may make dividing up portions harder. The courses were made up of a salad, main course (beef in our case, cheese plate and then dessert. The food was really good, not great but really good.
I would come here again or recommend it to my friends as a nice dinning experience.

Ad Hoc was fantastic! The menu was inventive and fresh and the service was fantastic. We dined at one of the Michelin star restaurants in the area the following night and rated Ad Hoc to be far and away better on all levels.

We've heard such great things about Ad Hoc. And granted, the food was decent, but nothing spectacular or unique. We enjoyed Bouchon and Bottega more. I guess it depends on what the menu of the day is, but ours was average. In fact, I actually thought the salad lacked some flavor and the meat for my entree was a bit salty. In any case, I MAY go back to give it one more try, but I would not necessarily recommend it to others. I've heard great things from other people, so perhaps we just had an "off" day. The environment was fun and the service was pretty good. I liked the feel of the place, I just wished the food had been more tasty.

It's certainly a good place to check out if you're at Yountville and can't get in Thomas Keller's French Laundry.

It is hard to give a review of our last evening at Ad Hoc. We celebrated a milestone event and had very high expectations. Ad Hoc exceeded every expectation. The price fixe menu was amazing, diverse and delicious. The venue is not pretentious but warm and energetic. From the moment we walked in the door we were warmly greeted, attentively served and the timing of the meal was perfect. In our case the service exceeded the food. Excellence in everything-A truly Keller experience!

As always, Ad Hoc is right on the money. This time we ate way too much at our B&B wine time and were a bit too full to appreciate the 4 courses offered at Ad Hoc...but we tried a bit of everything (Pear and Pistachio Salad, Hanger Steak with Bacon and Greens, Gouda Cheese course with Marmalade and Cocoa Nib Cake). Always a great value and fun scene. And such a warm, holiday feel. Oh, and awesome music too!

Wonderful stop in the wine country. Affordable pri fixe, although steer clear if you're a strict vegetarian. The main course is almost always a meat, although the sides that come with it are generally delicious. Fun for a group with the "family style" of serving food, although can be charming for just a twosome as well. Great way to experience Thomas Keller without breaking the bank.
